Canton Arms to become Anchor and Hope?

I have heard a rumour that the Canton Arms, South Lambeth Road, London SW8 has been acquired by the Anchor and Hope (The Cut, SE1). For anyone who doesn't know this wonderful pub it's a very well reviewed gastro pub - and the food is extremely brilliant.

  1. Wow. That'd be fantastic news.

What happened to the Canton Arms? It just spontaneously... closed. Any story?

Slowly but surely, there will be no "old Stockwell" left on the traditional pub front!

  4. I would rather have a branch of the Anchor and Hope than "old Stockwell" and I've lived here for 40 years.

  5. If you want "old Stockwell" I recommend The Grosvenor - I was rather taken by its untouched, unmodernised charm. A proper boozer.

But I will be visiting the Anchor & Hope Stockwell (if that's what it is) as well...

  6. Hello everyone, I'm Charlie, part of the team that has taken over the Canton Arms. Its nice to hear that there is interest in the Canton and as a Stockwell resident myself I know how much the community needs a quality pub. Sorry I havent posted anything sooner but I have (and still am) very busy trying to get the pub open. We will open officially on Thursday the 18th but locals are welcome to come down on the Wednesday night and have a drink. Its good in a way to hear comments like the 'yuppy gastro pub' above as that is something we are trying to get away from. We want this pub to be accessable to the whole community and whilst bringing high quality ale, food and wine we will do our best to keep the prices down without giving it away! Hope to see you all soon, please do come and introduce yourselves to myself or Trish (Chef / owner). Charlie.

  8. Good Luck Charlie!
As a local resident we have watched hoping that the Canton and the Albert would reopen - so well done on the reopening of the Canton Pub.
The local area is sociable and hopefully us locals will appreciate "our local" all the more- frequenting it for drinks and suppers and remembering its use it or lose it.

Hope it all goes well for you and your Biz
