I would like to raise a point about cyclists here and I do not for a moment mean it to reflect in any way upon the death that has occured. I raise it as a modern cycling feature that I have noticed - as a life long cyclist myself - though to a far lesser extent nowadays than from when I was much younger in the KENTISH WHEELERS - a club now alas no more.
I have noticed quite a number of very trendy young cyclists who have very very lightweight machines and they to me appear to be riding around with no brakes whatever. I am astonished by it as the practice puts not only their own selves in danger. It looks very very stylish and trendy with a machine totally stripped down to the barest minumum but it is incredibly irresponsible. A fixed wheel alone is not sufficient to use to back peddle for stopping rapidly. Maybe others have notice this if not keep your eyes peeled you'll see 'em.
Again I do not mean by raising this here to cast any cloud whatever on the death of the oval cyclist.
I particularly stated that my comments about stylist trendy cyclists without brakes were NOT refering to the woman who was killed. The matter was raised solely as having topicality about cycling and safety.
Anybody interesting in the bikes with no brakes "scene" can get some insights by making a Google "images" search using the following "bikes without brakes". Personally I reckon such riders ought to have their collars felt.
