Once upon a time, Stockwell had its own cinema. In fact, it had at least two. The building that now houses the Third Space Bar (211 Clapham Road) was one of them.
Here are some facts about the cinema given by Ken Roe on the website Cinema Treasures:
Early 1920s Opened as the Stockwell Palladium.
1937 Reconstructed and reopened as the Ritz.
1957 Re-named Classic Cinema.
1969 Became a film club, showing uncertificated adult films.
1979 Reverted to a Classic in 1979, showing regular films.
1981 Closed.
See also darkscreens.co.uk, which lists the lost cinemas of South London (Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth), for a run-down of cinemas in the area, most of which are, sadly, long gone.
The London Project, documenting the birth of the film business in London, lists cinemas and associated businesses in Lambeth.
Does anyone know anything about the Star Electric Theatre at 223 Clapham Road?
